Assistant Director, LGBTQ

Reporting to and working with the Director of the LGBTQ Center, the Assistant Director (AD) shares responsibility for administrative leadership and high-level planning, development, implementation and assessment of campus-wide programs designed to support the success, wellbeing, recruitment/retention/graduation, and holistic integration of LGBTQ+ undergraduate students, graduate students, staff, faculty and community stakeholders.  In this role, the AD works with internal and external constituencies on diversity initiatives and implementation, enhances the visibility and impact of the LGBTQ Center, and maintains shared responsibility over daily operations at the LGBTQ Center.  The Assistant Director is a senior member of the LGBTQ Center staff and serves as a stand-in for the Director when they are unavailable.


The AD is responsible for shared oversight of LGBTQ Center branding, marketing, and external communications.  The AD leads the management and analysis of LGBTQ Center data and is responsible for preparing annual and periodic reports and presentations.  The AD works with LGBTQ Center staff in setting goals that align with the mission of the department and of the Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (ODIB), prioritizing short and long-term goals and defining measurable outcomes for assessment.  The AD is effective at solving complex problems using data-driven knowledge to close gaps in initiatives that enhance the overall LGBTQ student experience while cultivating a sense of belonging and safety.  The AD Will stay abreast of relevant research, theory, best practices, and national trends as well as current issues impacting LGBTQ+ communities in higher education to promote student persistence, academic success, retention, and graduation.  The AD shares responsibility for responding to inquiries and providing consultation as well as appropriate resources, and referrals to students, staff, faculty and other stakeholders.


The AD will be responsible for leading and supervising collaborative staff initiatives for major programs and events.  They will serve as a primary contact for consultation and coordination with on and off-campus resources to cultivate and foster relationships that will maximize student potential and increase the visibility and impact of the LGBTQ Center.

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Four or more years of related work experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of LGBTQ history, culture, and higher education student support services
  • Experience working with diverse student populations
  • Experience in coordinating cultural, social, educational and/or social justice programming, and leadership and program development
  • Experience in designing and implementing educational programs focusing on diverse student populations
  • Demonstrated competence in print and digital marketing
  • Professional experience advising and creating leadership development opportunities for students and student organizations
  • Experience developing community and public engagement programs, and public speaking
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Familiarity with Gender and Sexuality Studies
  • Skills in curriculum development and implementation as well as skills in Assessment, Website Management and Student Development Theory
  • Skills in Mentoring/Advising
  • Excellent written/oral communication skills along with good research skills
  • Comprehensive understanding of social justice and the intersection of identities and oppression


  • Master's Degree in Higher Education, LGBTQ Studies, Counseling, Women's Studies, Diversity Studies, Social Work Psychology, Cultural Studies, Communication Studies or another related field
  • Two or more years of related work experience
